Guaiacwood Oil 2021 Cites quota preview

Asunción, November 30th, 2021

This morning at 9:00 o clock at the Environment Ministry auditorium, the Paraguayan Cites Authority led by Mr. Frederick Bauer and Biodiversity Director Mr. Rafael Sosa communicated to the Paraguayan Guaiacwood Oil producers that the 2021 quota will be of 270 Tons of Guaiacwood Oil – Bulnesia Samientoi.

This volume was submitted to the Cites Geneva officers through the 2021-2025 NDF – Non Determinant Finding study. The 270-ton annual quota has been posted on the Cites website, and must now be officially communicated by Cites Geneva to the parties. Once this happens, Paraguayan Cites will issue the official quota release communication to local producers. This should not take more than 10 days. Hopefully!

The NDF study is presented by the Paraguayan Cites officials to Cites Geneva every 5 years and includes the current status of the Bulnesia Sarmientoi  species and its sustainable commercial recommendation use by the timber and essential oil industry for the next 5 years (2021-2025). The annual volume of 270 tons for the 2021-2025 period is 20 tons more than the previous quota of 250 tons. After a friendly debate the producers and government officials reached a consensus and agreed on the volume assigned to each essential oil producer. It was informed that the 2022 quota of 270 tons of essential oil will only be released after the 2021 quota is completely used up and this is likely to happen by June 2022.

Currently there is a backlog in orders to be shipped out. «The Cites certificate issuance will not be rushed» said officials and all procedures will continue at the established time frames. This will make the export of our beloved Guaiacwood oil, slow and tedious.
We can finally see light at the end of the tunnel, let’s be thankful and patient.
